Mold Growth Thrives in Damp and Dark Areas

Mold can grow just about anywhere, in harsh conditions, and at the ends of the Earth. However, that's not to say that certain factors don't make it more likely to grow in a particular area. Most species of mold have the same sets of desirable conditions and thus share some of the most common growth places. If your property meets one or more of the following descriptions, it may be at an increased risk of mold growth.

Old, Unkempt Properties

Older or less well-maintained properties are often very likely to incur mold damage in Chicago, as these properties often have dark interiors, open and unwatched wood and fabric materials, and leaks that create damp conditions. These are all highly conducive to mold growth, especially in warm and humid weather. Make sure to keep your home in good shape, and if you cannot do the work yourself, it's best to hire a contractor rather than let the house deteriorate. It may save you money down the road.

Poorly Ventilated Areas

Does your home have a stuffy, stagnant area? Worse, is this in a dark and potentially damp place? Stale air makes for excellent mold growth conditions. Try improving ventilation across your home, keep windows open, and perhaps use fans in areas such as basements that are not commonly used. Moisture is the most crucial factor in mold proliferation. SERVPRO IICRC trained techs suggest that you keep the interior ambient temperature between 72 and 80 degrees to mitigate fungi growth potential.

Areas Subject to the Elements

Is there a part of your home that absorbs the elements more than another? This may be a basement with an open window or cracked foundation, a closet with a small hole leading outside, or even an exterior shed or garage. Having a region of your home's interior exposed to the outside and particularly to wet weather increases the chances of mold development in that area. There is that moisture again.

SERVPRO of Evergreen Park / South Chicago City is prepared and equipped to deal with mold damage in all conditions and all times of day or night. If your home needs professional mold remediation, call us at (773) 337-3900.
